Minuet Cat Singapore: The Complete Owner’s Care Guide
Minuet cat Singapore guide: heritage, short legs, sweet temperament, grooming, health and HDB living. Meet our hand-selected Napoleon kittens today.
The Minuet cat in Singapore is one of the most charming companion cats you can bring into an HDB flat — a sweet, round-faced breed that blends the calm affection of the Persian with the playful curiosity of the Munchkin. Often called the Napoleon, the Minuet is compact, adaptable and famously people-loving, which makes it a wonderful fit for apartment life. In this owner’s guide we cover its heritage, its short-legged look, temperament, coat care, health and exactly what to expect when raising one in our climate.
- The Minuet (formerly Napoleon) is a Munchkin × Persian/Exotic cross — short legs, a round face and big, sweet eyes.
- Temperament is the draw: gentle and lap-loving like a Persian, curious and playful like a Munchkin.
- Comes in short-hair and long-hair coats; long-hairs need daily brushing, short-hairs a few times a week.
- Generally healthy, but insist on PKD- and HCM-screened parents and watch weight to protect the spine and joints.
- Lifespan is typically 12–15 years with good care.
- Excellent for HDB living — small, quiet and content indoors; HDB allows a maximum of two cats per flat.
- Cat licensing is free until 31 Aug 2026, after which it is a one-time S$35 government fee per sterilised cat.

What is a Minuet cat?
The Minuet is a purpose-bred companion breed created by crossing the Munchkin with the Persian and Exotic Shorthair. It was originally named the Napoleon after Napoleon “Minuet” Bonaparte, then renamed the Minuet by The International Cat Association (TICA) in 2015.
From the Persian side it inherits a soft, rounded look and a mellow disposition; from the Munchkin side it inherits the signature short legs and a spark of playfulness. The result is a low-slung, teddy-bear-faced cat that stays kitten-cute well into adulthood — a big reason the Minuet has grown so popular with Singapore families.
Appearance: short legs and that round face
Minuets are small-to-medium cats, usually weighing about 2–5 kg. The breed is best known for its short, sturdy legs, a trait carried from the Munchkin. Importantly, not every Minuet is short-legged: some kittens are born with standard-length legs and show more of the Persian side. Both are true-to-type and equally healthy.
Other hallmarks include a broad, round head, full cheeks, a short muzzle and large, expressive eyes. The coat can be short or long, and the breed appears in virtually every colour and pattern — solids, tabbies, bicolours, colourpoints and more. Long-haired Minuets carry a plush, Persian-style ruff that many owners adore.
Because the low-slung body sits close to the ground, Minuets often look even smaller than they weigh. They stay compact throughout life, which is part of their appeal for smaller homes — they simply do not need the vertical space that a larger, athletic breed craves.
Temperament: gentle, playful and deeply affectionate
Ask any Minuet owner what sold them and the answer is almost always the personality. These cats are sweet-natured, sociable and genuinely enjoy human company. They tend to greet you at the door, follow you room to room and settle happily on a lap.
The short legs do not slow them down. Minuets love interactive play, puzzle feeders and a good chase, then switch to serene cuddle mode. They generally get along beautifully with children and other pets, which makes them ideal for busy family homes. If you like a cat that is affectionate without being demanding, the Minuet is hard to beat — a temperament comparable to the Ragdoll in its easy-going warmth.
Grooming and coat care in Singapore’s climate
Grooming depends entirely on coat length. In our humid climate, staying on top of brushing keeps the coat comfortable and mat-free.
- Short-haired Minuets: a thorough brush 2–3 times a week removes loose fur and limits shedding.
- Long-haired Minuets: daily brushing is best to prevent tangles around the ruff, armpits and behind the ears.
Wipe the eyes gently if you notice tear staining (common in flatter-faced lines), keep nails trimmed, and check ears weekly. An occasional bath helps long-hairs, and running air-conditioning or good ventilation keeps a plush-coated cat comfortable on hot days.
Because the Minuet’s short legs come from the Munchkin, keep your cat at a lean, healthy weight and avoid encouraging big jumps down from high furniture. Provide pet steps or ramps to favourite perches, and choose parents screened for polycystic kidney disease (PKD) and hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM). A responsible cattery will show you these results before you commit.
Health, lifespan and what to screen for
Minuets are generally robust little cats, and with good care most live 12–15 years. Because of the Persian ancestry and the short-legged gene, there are a few things every prospective owner should understand.
- PKD (polycystic kidney disease): a Persian-line concern — parents should be DNA-tested clear.
- HCM (a heart condition): parents should be regularly screened by a vet cardiologist.
- Joint and spinal comfort: lean body condition and low-impact living protect the back and legs.
- Eyes and breathing: flatter-faced lines can have tear staining; a moderate muzzle reduces the risk.
Every CatzillaSG kitten is hand-selected from registered breeders, comes with a lifetime congenital health guarantee, and is placed only after we have confirmed the parents’ health screening — so you start with a healthy, well-socialised companion.
Is a Minuet cat right for Singapore HDB living?
For most flat-dwellers, yes. The Minuet cat suits Singapore HDB life almost perfectly: it is small, quiet, content to stay indoors and thrives on the close human contact that apartment living naturally provides.
Keep two practical rules in mind. HDB permits a maximum of two cats per flat, and all cats should be sterilised, microchipped and licensed. Cat licensing is currently free until 31 Aug 2026, after which it becomes a one-time government fee of S$35 per sterilised cat — a licence fee, not a purchase cost. Choosing a healthy Minuet in Singapore
The Minuet is a specialty breed, so provenance matters. Look for a source that screens parents for PKD and HCM, socialises kittens with people from birth, and is transparent about pedigree and vet records. Kittens should leave only after they are weaned, litter-trained, vaccinated and vet-checked.
CatzillaSG is an AVS-licensed cattery, founded in 2021, with 171+ five-star Google reviews and more than 700 kittens placed with Singapore families. We do not breed — we hand-select each Minuet from trusted, registered breeders and vet the health screening for you, so the difficult due-diligence is already done before you ever meet a kitten. If you would like guidance on evaluating any source, our how to choose a cattery in Singapore guide walks through every question to ask. You can also browse our British Shorthair and British Longhair pages if you are weighing up breeds.
Whichever breed you choose, plan for the essentials of a happy indoor cat in Singapore: a quiet spot to sleep, scratching posts, daily play, mesh netting on windows and balconies, and a consistent feeding routine. A Minuet asks for little beyond your company — give it that, and it will reward you with years of gentle, affectionate companionship.
Questions, answered
Are Minuet cats good for first-time owners in Singapore?
Yes. Minuets are gentle, adaptable and forgiving, which makes them one of the easier breeds for new owners. They are content indoors, enjoy human company and settle quickly into an HDB flat. Just commit to regular brushing (especially for long-hairs) and weight management to protect their joints.
Do Minuet cats have health problems because of their short legs?
Well-bred Minuets are generally healthy and live active lives despite their short legs. The main precautions are keeping them lean, avoiding hard landings from great heights, and buying from a source whose parent cats are DNA-tested for PKD and screened for HCM. Responsible selection keeps risks low.
How much grooming does a Minuet cat need?
It depends on the coat. Short-haired Minuets need brushing about two to three times a week. Long-haired Minuets do best with a daily brush to prevent mats around the ruff and legs. Add weekly ear checks, occasional nail trims and gentle eye wiping if there is tear staining.
What is the difference between a Minuet and a Munchkin cat?
A Munchkin is a short-legged breed on its own. A Minuet is a Munchkin crossed with the Persian and Exotic Shorthair, which adds a rounder face, a plusher coat and a softer, more laid-back temperament. Minuets can be short- or long-haired, and some are born with standard-length legs.
Are Minuet cats hypoallergenic?
No cat is truly hypoallergenic, and the Minuet is no exception. They shed and produce the Fel d 1 protein that triggers most allergies. Regular brushing, air purifiers and good ventilation can reduce airborne dander, but sensitive individuals should spend time with the breed before committing.
How long do Minuet cats live?
With good nutrition, indoor living and routine veterinary care, Minuet cats typically live 12 to 15 years. Keeping your cat at a healthy weight, staying current on vaccinations and parasite prevention, and scheduling an annual vet check all help them reach the upper end of that range.
